I thought these pics of how Austria and Germany may inspire some of the Master Gardeners. They did me. I was especially
impressed how the dress up the cemetaries and their cows. They make use of every inch of space so you don't see a lot of
abandoned lots covered in weeds or grass in the towns, very few lawns. If someone wants a vine growing on their building,
then the pavers are removed from that space for the vine to grow. I saw evidence of that with Clematis, grapevine, Thumbergia,
and espaliaded Pears. The window boxes of course were the center of attention, especially in Austria, the hangers are built
into the buildings for the heavy boxes to rest on and then plastic boxes rest inside. The towns usually have a florist hired to
start the flowers and arrange the colors of mostly Ivy Geraniums that cascade so nicely and last so long into the cold weather.
The fruit and vegetable stands are a daily item so the stands are permanent, and well shown off. Hope you enjoy the following
snapshots:

The Highlands School habitat was started in 1998 and features native
Wisconsin prairie and woodland edge flowers,
grasses and trees. If you would like to volunteer with this project, contact Karen Syverson, the project coordinator.
The Outagamie County Master Gardener Volunteers received a tour of Kate Langner's 4-acre prairie garden in Fremont
during a member meeting.
