Butchart Gardens in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
The Butchart Gardens, established in the early 1900s, started as a lime quarry for Mr. Butchart's cement manufacturing plant. It was Mrs. Butchart's determination and imagination that turned the limestone and clay quarry into the beautiful gardens they are today. Even though the two arbor vitae have stood in the same spot since the beginning, the color scheme changes each year, although many beds are still edged in blue flowers that Mrs. Butchart favored.

The Highlands School habitat is one of many projects sponsored by the Outagamie County Master Gardeners Association. The outdoor nature area, which was started in 1998, features native
Wisconsin prairie and woodland edge flowers,
grasses and trees. If you would like to volunteer with this project, contact Karen Syverson, the project coordinator.
The Outagamie County Master Gardener Volunteers received a tour of Kate Langner's 4-acre prairie garden in Fremont
during their July member meeting.
