Becoming a Master Gardener Volunteer
in the Outagamie County
Master Gardener Association is an easy, 2-step process:
Complete the Master Gardener Volunteer classes. The
36-hour training course is offered yearly at the
UW-Extension, 3365 W. Brewster St., Appleton. Classes begin in January and run through April. You must achieve at least a 70-percent score on the final, open-book exam. To register, call Denise Vander Zanden, at
920-832-5119. The cost is $200.
Provide 24 hours of volunteer service on a sanctioned project by Oct. 1. Documentation of your service must be submitted to the UW-Extension by Oct. 1 to receive your certification of completion. It is recommended that new members have a mentor (current member) for a resource. If new members are unable to complete the service hours requirement they can take an extension until April 1. However, their certification will not be reflected in state records until the following year.

Recertification is required annually to remain a Master Gardener Volunteer in good standing. To be recertified, attend 10 hours of continuing education and provide 24 hours of volunteer service. Submit documentation of your continuing education and service hours to the UW-Extension by Oct. 1 every year. Download this form with directions on how to report your volunteer service hours and continuing education hours for 2012.
Are you a Master Gardener Volunteer who hasn't turned in your hours for some time, maybe for a few years? Did you know that you can always start the process new each year? You don't have to retake the classes. Simply pay your annual dues and report your education and hours. It's that simple. We've missed you and look forward to having you back! Any questions, contact President Mary Learman at britmary7@yahoo.com.
